Joyce's was founded in 1949 by Sam and Joyce Currie and is a proud family-owned business and is managed by Seymour Currie, son of Sam and Joyce. Over the past 60 years, Joyce's Dairy has been supplying the industry with fresh milk, and is now excited to announce its new venture in commercial and stud Angus farming.
The Angus herd has grown enormously – from a few commercial cows purchased in 1991, to a herd size of 1600 cattle. In terms of the initial animals' purchases, there was always a goal in mind. Our goal was to provide a more flavourable good looking, thick set medium framed carcass with butt and balance. This would ultimately add both quality and value to the animal when sold. We wanted cattle that were polled and easily adaptable to any environment. We required cows with good mothering ability and that would make for easy calving. We also desired that the animals themselves could be utilized on the farm – by consuming the veld and crop residues after harvesting.
Over the years the herd was naturally mated, using bulls purchased from various renowned breeders. In the mid nineties, we started to follow a more focused breeding program in the herd, and Artificial Insemination was introduced. In order to improve the herd and maximize the quality of cows we could offer, both local and imported semen of the highest (genetic) quality were used. Currently, the semen we use in breeding is imported from the USA and Canada.
